Helado Negro Reworks Sly and the Family Stone’s Dance Floor Classic

Helado Negro’s new cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s Dance To The Music turns a 1967 funk landmark into something hazy, warm, and contemporary, extending Roberto Carlos Lange’s recent run of stylistic detours.

Roberto Carlos Lange rarely stays in one lane for long. In the months since last fall’s The Last Sound On Earth EP, the artist known as Helado Negro has turned up in sharply different corners of the scene, including collaborations with Irreversible Entanglements and Vines. That run has made his latest move feel less like a surprise and more like part of a pattern: he’s now released a cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s 1967 breakthrough, Dance To The Music.

Lange doesn’t treat the song like a museum piece. His take keeps the groove intact but filters it through a woozy, warm-toned palette that feels slightly vaporous, like funk heard through summer heat. The rhythm still pushes forward, but the texture is softer and more elastic, which gives the track a different emotional weight than the bright punch of the original single.

On Bandcamp, Lange framed the release as an open invitation rather than a nostalgia exercise, writing in all caps, “I’VE LOVED SLY STONE FROM THE VERY FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG! I HOPE THIS SONG INVITES YOU TO LISTEN TO EVERYTHING HE’S EVER DONE. DANCE 2 THA MUSIC!” The statement tracks with Helado Negro’s broader catalog, which often connects personal listening history to contemporary production choices instead of simply recreating past eras.

Even the presentation nods to that sensibility: the release arrives with cover art by Robert Beatty, whose vivid visual language has become closely tied to adventurous independent music. In context, this isn’t just a one-off cover. It’s another small but telling entry in Lange’s recent stretch of stylistic cross-pollination, and a reminder of how deeply Sly Stone’s songwriting still travels across generations and genres.
