“Ne Plus Ultra” is the first new music of the year from IDM-inspired duo ear, arriving as a terse, collaged single that feels more like a discovered soundtrack than a tidy pop moment. Buzzy bass blowouts rub against spaceship blips, icy vocals drift over cut-and-paste sound bits, kitten cries punctuate the mix, and 2000s electronica melodies thread it all together.

The song has a found-footage quality: abrupt edits and small sonic artifacts give it a cinematic jolt rather than the smooth arc of a conventional single. The title is a Latinate flourish — a phrase meaning “nothing further beyond” — and it suits the tracks refusal to linger, packing maximum texture into a minimal runtime.

This is the latest notch in a compact but deliberate run. Last September the duo self-released their debut album The Most Dear And The Future, which followed their first-ever release, 2024’s “Nerves.” Taken together, those releases suggest ear are crafting a consistent aesthetic more interested in micro-moments and collage than broad stylistic reinvention.
