Two men stabbed at Birmingham dance music event as police investigate Digbeth incident

Two men were stabbed at a dance music event in Birmingham on Saturday evening, prompting a major police investigation in Digbeth.

West Midlands Police said officers were called to Lower Trinity Street shortly before 7pm on May 9 after reports that two people had suffered stabbing injuries at the Cru2: The Birmingham Shutdown event. Both men were taken to hospital and their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. No arrests have been confirmed so far, and detectives remained at the scene as inquiries continued.

The incident cut across a large outdoor line-up that had brought together bassline, drum ‘n’ bass and UK garage acts including Mozey, Mist, Basslayerz, DJ Q and Jamie Duggan. The event had been scheduled to run from 2pm to 11pm at Luna Springs, a venue that usually hosts club nights, football fan zones and festivals.

According to local reports, the music stopped suddenly after the stabbing. Messages appeared on the big screens telling attendees, “There has been an incident. Can everyone please bare [sic] with us”. That was later changed to, “There has been an incident. Can everyone please leave the venue via the nearest exit.” The crowd was then evacuated.

Police have not said where inside the venue the stabbings took place, or what may have led to the violence. Investigators are understood to be reviewing CCTV and speaking with staff and witnesses as part of the wider inquiry.

West Midlands Police have asked anyone with information to come forward, telling people they can call 101 or use the Live Chat option on their website here, quoting incident number 4320. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A police spokesperson said: “We know that they know there were lots of people inside the venue during the time of the incident. So would ask anyone who has any mobile phone footage, or information to come forward and make a report or speak to officers at the scene.”
