Phoebe Bridgers Debuts New Songs at First Solo Show Since 2023 in Roswell

Phoebe Bridgers marked her first solo performance in three years on Friday, May 8, with an invite-only set at the Liberty, a 400-capacity theater in Roswell, New Mexico. The no-phones show was both unusually intimate and unusually pointed: Bridgers worked through familiar material like “Motion Sickness,” “Kyoto,” and “Garden Song,” then folded in several new songs and a video short said to preview her still-untitled third album.

The gig landed less like a one-off surprise than a carefully staged reset. Bridgers reportedly told the crowd it was a “test” ahead of future performances, which makes sense given how little she’s done on her own since her last album cycle. She was joined by her frequent collaborator Christian Lee Hutson, who played guitar, harmonica, harmonies, and percussion throughout the night. One of the new tracks allegedly addressed the death of her father in 2023, adding another layer of personal weight to a show that was already being parsed by fans in real time.

The small-scale rollout didn’t stop there. The following day, May 9, flyers for another Bridgers date reportedly popped up in Lubbock, Texas, on the same day a series of photos surfaced showing her in the studio with Matty Healy, Alex G, Jack Antonoff, and her partner, Bo Burnham. The implication is obvious enough: Bridgers appears to be deep into LP3, even if nothing official has been announced. Pitchfork has reached out to Bridgers’ team for comment.

As with most things Bridgers has done since Punisher, the details around the Roswell show invited speculation. Each attendee received a small piece of a painting in the lockable pouches where phones were stored, and fans have started wondering whether the fragments, taken together, point toward the cover of the next album. New merch sold at the show added to that theory, with rumored lyrics from a fresh song printed on it: “Now I can’t see any stars in the sky. When a dreams comes true, a fantasy dies…but we’re gonna be alright, me and you.”

Bridgers released Punisher in 2020 and last issued new solo music with “Sidelines” in 2022, which appeared on the soundtrack to Hulu’s Conversations With Friends. Since then, her name has kept circulating through collaborations with Rob Moose, the National, Arlo Parks, SZA, Andrew Bird, and others, while boygenius has remained the most visible part of her career in the meantime. In 2024, the trio won three Grammys for their debut album The Record. Her solo story, though, still begins with Stranger in the Alps, which arrived in 2017 and set the template for how closely listeners would read everything that followed.
