Dua Lipa filed a $15 million suit accusing Samsung of using her image on TV boxes without permission or pay.

Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the company of using her image and likeness to help sell televisions without permission or payment. The case, filed Friday, May 8, centers on what her legal team calls the “unauthorized commercial exploitation” of her identity, with the complaint saying Samsung prominently used an image of the pop star on TV packaging sold in 2025 and 2026.
The suit, brought by Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP in the United States District Court in the Central District of California, names copyright infringement, trademark infringement and violation of Dua Lipa’s right of publicity. According to the filing, she became aware of the use in June 2025 and issued cease-and-desist demands, only for Samsung to allegedly keep the products on the market anyway.
“Samsung has refused to comply with Ms. Lipa’s repeated demands that it cease and desist from infringing on her rights by the continued exploitation of the Infringing Products,” the firm wrote in the filed civil action documents. “Samsung’s response has been dismissive and callous, and the Infringing Products remain on the market to this day, still being sold throughout the country in ongoing acts of willful infringement.”
The complaint argues that Samsung’s conduct has caused “substantial, manifest, and irreparable harm” while enriching the company at Dua Lipa’s expense. It says she is seeking both damages and an end to what it describes as the theft of her “intellectual and personal identity assets.”
The image at the center of the dispute appears in the court documents as a backstage shot from Austin City Limits in 2024. The filing says Dua Lipa owns the copyright and holds sole control over its use. The complaint also includes photos shared by fans on social media showing the Samsung product in stores, one of which is captioned, “I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it.”
The lawsuit also leans on Dua Lipa’s existing commercial footprint, noting that she has licensed her image for campaigns with Puma, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., the 2026 Winter Olympics, Bvlgari and Nespresso. It frames that history as part of the larger argument: that her name and likeness have clear market value, and that Samsung allegedly tried to benefit from that value without authorization.
That context matters because Dua Lipa is no stranger to major brand partnerships, but the difference here is control. Her music career has already produced two major studio albums, 2020’s Future Nostalgia, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and 2024’s Radical Optimism, which debuted at No. 2, along with three Grammy wins. The case now turns that commercial profile back on the company accused of using it as packaging bait.
