With Carousel only a couple of weeks from release, villagerrr have rolled out another preview of the album in “Virginia,” a new track featuring Richmond’s Hotspit. It arrives after “Locket,” “Swimming,” and the title track, continuing the Columbus band’s steady run of singles ahead of the record’s arrival.
For bandleader Mark Allen Scott, “Virginia” is less a tidy statement than a survival note. He describes it as “a song about trying to keep your head down and keep going even when things feel like they’re all falling apart on a grand scale.” That framing fits the song’s broad alt-country sweep, but it’s the writing that lingers: “How to explain what you can’t explain/ Tell me how/ How to revise or reiterate memories.”
The single also comes with a video directed by Trevor Hock.
Carousel is out 5/29 via Winspear.
