Blood Red Shoes Release ‘Dead Air’ for Supermassive’s Horror Game Directive 8020

Blood Red Shoes have issued a new single, ‘Dead Air’, written for Directive 8020, the latest sci-fi horror game from Supermassive Games.
The game launches later today, May 12, and its Steam description frames it as a cinematic survival story built around choice and branching consequences. Set 12 light years from home on Tau Ceti f, the premise turns on the doomed colony ship Cassiopeia, which crash lands only for the crew to discover they are not alone. An alien organism capable of mimicking its prey begins hunting them, and the stakes widen into a blunt dilemma: to survive, the crew may have to put everyone on Earth at risk.
For Supermassive, the project sits comfortably within the studio’s horror lane. The soundtrack was composed by longtime collaborator Jason Graves, while Blood Red Shoes were brought in to write an original track to sit alongside the game’s atmosphere. The result is ‘Dead Air’, which the band has now shared publicly.
“We were approached by Supermassive Games about their new game Directive 8020 so we went into their offices and got shown a load of what they were working on,” the band explained on Instagram.
That visit seems to have done most of the conceptual heavy lifting. As the duo put it, they were struck by how close the game felt to a playable horror film, and they connected that mood to the material they were already making around their 2022 album Ghosts On Tape. “As two people who know almost nothing about video games we were surprised to find out where the culture is at,” they wrote. “This game is more like a playable horror movie and the atmosphere of it fit perfectly with what we were making on [2022 album] ‘Ghosts On Tape’ We came out of there and made ‘Dead Air’ for them using some rough ideas we had sketched out with [producer] Tom Dalgety while recording our last album.”
The band marked 20 years together in 2024 with a run of shows, then reappeared earlier this year with ‘Screams’. An October tour across Europe and the UK is also on the calendar, keeping their name in circulation at a moment when the group has been balancing anniversary-era hindsight with new material.
