Body Type Set Up Tally With the Playful Jangle of “Mulberry”

Body Type are back with Tally, their first album since 2023’s Expired Candy, and the lead single suggests the Sydney post-punk band have no interest in dialing down their edge. On “Mulberry,” Sophie McComish and Annabel Blackman sound loose, amused, and fully in command, pushing their voices into a bright, brittle jangle that carries a little of that early Courtney Barnett snap, though not in any reductive, one-note way.

That comparison mostly comes down to delivery, especially the drawling playfulness McComish and Blackman lean into here. But the song also fits into a broader Australian lineage of sharp, personality-first guitar music that treats deadpan as a kind of propulsion. If that reads as a familiar mode, Body Type still make it feel lived-in rather than borrowed. “Mulberry” lands like a band enjoying the space it has earned.

It has been three years since Expired Candy, and the intervening stretch has quietly shifted the group’s position. Body Type have signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s (p)Doom label, and Tally was recorded in Los Angeles with Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa producing. Those names matter, not as marketing gloss, but because they place the band inside a network of artists and labels that tend to reward personality over polish. “Mulberry” doesn’t overstate the case, but it does make it clear that the move has sharpened the frame.
