Eric Clapton ended his Madrid show early after a fan threw a vinyl LP at his chest during the final stretch of the set.
Eric Clapton ended his Madrid concert early on Thursday night, May 7, after a fan in the front rows threw a vinyl LP that struck him in the chest as he was closing out the set.
The incident took place at the Movistar Arena during the final stretch of a show that had already run through a heavily loaded selection of Clapton staples. He had just finished playing Cocaine and was due back for an encore of Before You Accuse Me, but he did not return to the stage.
Reaction from the audience was immediate, with one attendee posting on X,
“Very sad indeed. What kind of idiot does that?”
alongside footage of the moment.
Clapton’s setlist in Madrid drew from across the different phases of his career, moving through Badge, Key To The Highway, I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man, I Shot The Sheriff, Kind Hearted Woman Blues, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out, Golden Ring, Layla, Tears In Heaven, Holy Mother, Cross Road Blues, Little Queen Of Spades, and Cocaine.
The Madrid date was part of Clapton’s current European tour, and the interruption landed awkwardly against the veteran guitarist’s long live reputation. It also came ahead of a major UK one-off this summer, when he is scheduled to play Sandringham Estate on August 23. Ronnie Wood and His Band, plus Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders, are also on the bill, with remaining tickets available here.
Clapton’s most recent album, Meanwhile, arrived in 2024 and featured guest turns from Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Bradley Walker, Judith Hill, Daniel Santiago, and Simon Climie. Last year also saw MTV air a 30th anniversary celebration of his 1992 Unplugged performance, the album from which sold more than 26 million copies and became the best-selling live album of all time.
That Unplugged set remains one of the cleaner lines through Clapton’s catalog, because it reframed songs like Layla and Tears In Heaven in acoustic form while also making room for the blues standards that have always sat near the center of his work, including Before You Accuse Me and Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out. Even as Clapton’s live history gets revisited, he has stayed openly dismissive of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, despite being a three-time inductee. In 2024, he called it “a frat boys club that happened to lure [me] in,” adding, “It’s not a place for rebels. It’s establishment stuff.”
