Last Dinner Party Share “Big Dog”, a Live Staple Finally Out on Island

Last Dinner Party have formally released “Big Dog,” a riff-forward number that has been part of their set since 2023 and is out now on Island Records. The single arrives as the band continues to expand beyond the theatrical shock-rock short stories that made their debut so magnetic.

The London five-piece are still riding the momentum of their sophomore album From The Pyre, which arrived last year, and have kept a steady stream of activity since. Earlier this year they contributed the raucous “Let’s Do It Again!” to the benefit compilation HELP(2), and later this year they are slated to open shows for Olivia Rodrigo, who also appears on that same compilation.

I will see them at Salt Lake City’s Kilby Block Party next week, where “Big Dog” has already proven itself live. That history matters: this is not a freshly written single so much as a document of a stage weapon. The studio release tightens a song fans have known in the mosh and the mezzanine for a couple of years, preserving the tension the band trades in — sudden melodrama one moment, blunt riffing the next.

The group’s knack for balancing brazen theatrics and genuine melody is still evident. They can lean toward Kate Bush-like frippery in their arrangments, then pivot into something built for headbanging without losing either element. “Big Dog” sits squarely in that lane, a feverish riff-rocker that benefits from being vetted live before its release.

Director Elliott Arndt helms the new video, which is heavy on live footage and plays like a performance record as much as a promo clip. Alongside the single the band also issued a studio version of “Come All You Beasts,” the short poem they typically recite as an intro before launching into the song. It is not a spoken-word track in the minimalist sense; the recording functions as a proper prelude, complete with riffs and musical weight that segue into the main track.

For a band whose image and stagecraft are as integral as their songs, releasing a live-tested track like “Big Dog” now feels strategic rather than sentimental. It consolidates the Last Dinner Party identity they honed while touring From The Pyre and places a reliable setpiece into the streaming canon ahead of bigger touring dates later this year.
