Lightning Bug Reverts to Audrey Kang Solo on New EP In Between Things, Shares “Song for a…”

Lightning Bug has circled back to where it began. After a stretch as a full band and the release of 2024’s No Paradise, Audrey Kang is once again steering the project as a solo endeavor, with a new EP, In Between Things, due this summer. The shift comes after Kang relocated from New York to Los Angeles and shared her demo of “Feast” last year to raise money for California wildfire recovery. That song now opens the new record.

The new EP also seems to sit inside the broader movement of Kang’s life over the last few years, which has taken her across different places and, by the sounds of it, left its imprint on the songs. Today she’s releasing “Song for a…,” a hushed, drifting piece that leans into the airy reach of her voice. Kang co-produced it with Sam Robertson and Ryan Richter, and the arrangement stays restrained long enough to let the track breathe. It begins with acoustic guitar and a quiet sense of suspension, then gradually widens without ever losing that stillness.

In a press release, Kang describes the song as a flash of emotional recognition rather than some neat declaration. “The song expresses the jolt, sudden awakening of falling in love — the zig-zagging between closeness and distance, among all the new unfoldings as you work out the friction of how to let someone in while keeping yourself safe. As if that’s even possible,” she says. It’s a useful framing for a project that has already changed shape more than once, and one that now seems to be returning to a more solitary mode without treating that as a retreat.
