Little Simz’s Sugar Girl EP Lands After Lotus and a Turn in Steve, With JT, DEELA, and 070 Shake

Little Simz has quietly issued Sugar Girl, a brief but telling addendum to the work she’s been building since last year. The four-track EP arrives on the heels of Lotus, her sixth studio album, and follows a small-screen detour: Simz recently appeared in the Netflix film Steve opposite Cillian Murphy and contributed “Don’t Leave Too Soon” to its soundtrack.

She began teasing Sugar Girl a couple of weeks ago; the wait was short, but the new release feels deliberate in its compactness. Across the records four songs she enlists JT, DEELA, and 070 Shake, and the result is more collage than cohesive statement—each piece inhabits its own atmosphere rather than folding neatly into a single mood.

Theres no attempt here to outdo Lotuss scale. Instead, Sugar Girl acts like a set of sketches: textural, varied, and attentive to collaborator chemistry. The EPs closer, the dreamy “Telephone” featuring 070 Shake, registers as the most explicitly lush of the batch, but its only one shade in a short sequence that prefers contrast to uniformity.

As a piece of career timing, Sugar Girl is interesting for what it does and doesnt try to be. Coming after a major album and a film role, it reads as a low-stakes space for experimentation: small in scale but attentive to texture and guest turns. Its not a reinvention, nor a tidy epilogue to Lotus; its a short, purposeful interruption that underscores Simzs appetite for restless, collaborative work.
