Mick Jagger says he’s been listening to Zara Larsson since 2018
Mick Jagger says he’s been a Zara Larsson fan since Ruin My Life, as the singer prepares for a packed summer run.
Mick Jagger has outed himself as an early Zara Larsson listener, saying on Today earlier this week that he’s been into the Swedish pop singer since her 2018 single Ruin My Life.
Jagger was asked which contemporary artist he’s been paying attention to, and the Rolling Stones frontman answered with a story involving his son. “My son said to me, ‘Oh, Zara Larsson is having a big comeback.’ I said, ‘But she never went away for me,’” he said. He added, “When I’m in that mood, that’s what I like.” It was the kind of remark that lands as both fatherly small talk and a neat reminder of how long Larsson’s name has been circling in pop.
Larsson later appeared on the same programme on Friday (May 8), where the hosts played the clip back to her. “I can’t believe it,” she said after watching. “It’s so beautiful to just see how everyone’s coming on this journey.”
The exchange arrives in a busy stretch for Larsson. She released her fifth studio album last summer, led by the singles Pretty Ugly, Midnight Sun and Crush. Earlier this month, she followed it with the remix album Midnight Sun: Girls Trip, which pulls in PinkPantheress, Shakira, Tyla, Robyn, Madison Beer, Kehlani, Bambii and others.
NME awarded the record 4.5 stars, writing: “Coupled with the undimmed effervescence of the original album, ‘Midnight Sun: Girls Trip’ is a journey worth taking. And for Larsson, the doors to the “Khia asylum” are rapidly fading from sight in the rear-view mirror.”
She’s also set for a packed summer run, with festival slots at Mad Cool, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Lollapalooza, Montreux Jazz, Sziget, Pinkpop, Open’er, All Points East and Parklife. She was among the artists who joined PinkPantheress at Coachella this month, and she recently appeared on Tyla’s new single She Did It Again.
Jagger, meanwhile, has his own album cycle moving too. The Rolling Stones officially announced Foreign Tongues earlier this month, with guest appearances from Paul McCartney, Robert Smith, Steve Winwood and the band’s late drummer Charlie Watts. The record will also include a cover of an Amy Winehouse classic.
