Prisonnier Du Temps Maps a Sharper, Broader Sound on Prendre Le Pouvoir Par La Force

Jacky Cadiou is still best known as the bass player in Brest oi unit Syndrome 81, but his solo project Prisonnier Du Temps has become more than a side lane. On 2022’s Comme Un Lion En Cage, he pulled from the same street-punk framework while pushing it into colder, death-rock territory. The new LP, Prendre Le Pouvoir Par La Force (“Seize Power By Force”), keeps that foundation but opens up the arrangement palette in a way that feels deliberate rather than experimental for its own sake.

Two advance tracks are out now: La Liberté S’Obtient Par Le Sang and Dernier Regard. Both are built like stompers—hard downstrokes, gang-voice hooks, a bruised melodic line—but they don’t stay in one register. You can hear the influence set named on the Bandcamp page (Criminal Damage, Poison Idea, Tragedy), especially in the way the songs swing between grit and lift. The Tragedy comparison makes sense in the scale and emotional pressure, but there are also acoustic touches and “whoa-oh” refrains that pull the songs closer to new wave-adjacent songwriting than a strict oi revival.

That blend is where this project has started to matter beyond niche scene boundaries. French punk has no shortage of bands fluent in classic forms; what Cadiou is doing here is showing how those forms can stay confrontational while becoming more melodic and structurally open. The titles are direct and political, and the music meets that urgency without flattening into one mood. Prendre Le Pouvoir Par La Force doesn’t sound like a detour from Syndrome 81’s world so much as a parallel argument about where this sound can go next.
